DISCUSSION:

Gas exchange trade started to grow in Russia 15+ years ago. This was a thorny and inconsistent path which involved changing of trading venues and trading rules, too. However, we can say that gas trade at the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange is getting a more relevant factor. Companies use the exchange prices to set prices of their own, and the exchange rates follow seasonal fluctuations in demand and changes in market conditions. At the same time, up to now natural gas is the only energy source that the State controls prices for.

The Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia is working continuously to increase exchange sales of gas. Their new propositions are intended to establish fair price indices for fuels. With exchange auctions, the market will become more transparent and prices will be more predictable. According to the experts, bringing about sale increase is going to be quite a task, though.
