INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PETERSBURG
- St. Petersburg is the gas capital of Russia and year after year it has been hosting the country’s premier oil and gas industry event – the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum.
- The city is located on the 60th northern parallel, which is rather symbolical, as much of Russia’s gas production is concentrated along this latitude.
- St. Petersburg has been named the Russian gas motor capital three times: here, public transport and municipal vehicles are being actively switched to eco-friendly clean gas engine fuel. The city possesses about 5,000 buses, and more than half (in fact, it’s 52 %) currently run on gas engine fuel.
- Since 2021, Gazprom headquarters and its key subsidiaries have been based in St. Petersburg, too. The company’s parent and affiliated offices significantly contribute to the economy of the city, whose second name is the Northern Capital of Russia.
- Lakhta Centre in the Primorsky District of the city is the official headquarters of Gazprom. It is a multipurpose business and public facility, a new landmark both for the locals and tourists. Being 462 metres high, it is the tallest building in Europe and the world’s northernmost skyscraper.
- The St. Petersburg International Gas Forum is a place where every year leaders of the oil and gas sector meet government officials, top companies, market experts, academicians and young professionals on the banks of the Neva. In 2026, the Forum will be held for the 15th time, on October 6 to 9, in the ExpoForum convention and exhibition centre located in the southern part of the city and recognized as one of the world’s finest venues for major business events. Since 2023, the Forum’s official gala party has been hosted by the state-of-the-art Gazprom Arena Stadium.
